DAY 66
Oil on canvas / original painting / 76 × 60cm / signed on reverse by artist and Maclean brothers
DAY 66
‘Not long after taking up the oars, a huge wall of water had appeared before him, rising up from the depths as if to answer his wish for bigger seas. Apparently, he had recorded a desire for conditions to increase in his log entry the previous day. Careful what you wish for, especially whilst at sea.
Towering high above the aft cabin, it whistled towards the boat with the sound of rushing water, threatening to break. The stern rose skyward as Lachlan heaved on the oars, pulling with all his might at the final moment.
And then it was upon us and we were catapulted forwards, picking up speed as we surfed, careering down the side of the wave. The boat tipped forward, sitting more vertical than flat in the water. Time stood still for a moment.’
